Workplace substance abuse affects all businesses, regardless of size or industry.  Of the 12.3 million American adults who are current illicit drug users, 9.4 million (77 percent) are employed. Abuse of tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drugs is costly to our nation, exacting more than $700 billion annually in costs related to crime, lost work productivity and health care. Every year, illicit and prescription drug overdoses cause tens of thousands of deaths (nearly 70,000 in 2018), alcohol contributes to the death of more than 90,000 Americans, while tobacco is linked to an estimated 480,000 deaths per year.
